Anthropic donates Agent Skills to the Agentic AI Foundation
Anthropic is donating Agent Skills to the Agentic AI Foundation after adoption by more than 70 platforms. Existing skills and licenses remain unchanged, while a multi-company committee will develop versioned releases, a proposal process and security guidance.

TL;DR
- Agent Skills is moving to the Agentic AI Foundation after integration by more than 70 platforms, according to ClaudeDevs.
- Existing skills keep working and licenses stay unchanged, ClaudeDevs confirmed; using or contributing to the standard requires no foundation membership.
- Versioned releases and security guidance are priorities in the committee's initial roadmap.
A workflow format that began in Claude Code now has 1 million published skills and nearly 280 million installations, according to Anthropic. The foundation's same-day announcement also brings OpenAI's Open Responses into its project portfolio.
The AAIF handover
Anthropic launched skills in October 2025 and published the open standard that December, according to its announcement. AAIF sits under the Linux Foundation and already hosts the Model Context Protocol (MCP), which Anthropic also donated.
The transfer covers:
- The Agent Skills name and logo.
- The project's GitHub organization.
- The agentskills.io domain.
Adopters include ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot and VS Code. Anthropic says existing skills and licenses remain unchanged, with participation open to people outside AAIF.
Portable skill folders
A skill is a refreshingly low-tech package: a folder built around a SKILL.md file containing metadata and task instructions, as the format documentation explains.
Agents load skills in three stages:
- Discovery: At startup, the agent reads each available skill's name and description.
- Activation: When a task matches, it loads the full
SKILL.mdinstructions into context. - Execution: It follows those instructions, loading reference files or running bundled scripts as needed.
Full instructions enter context only when needed. Optional assets/ folders can carry templates, and presentation formatting is one of the documented use cases.
Six-organization steering committee
Engineers from six organizations will govern the standard through a Technical Steering Committee:
- Anthropic
- Earendil (Pi)
- Microsoft
- OpenAI
- OpenCode
Maintainers will serve as individuals, according to Anthropic's announcement, which names David Soria Parra and Mahesh Murag as Lead Maintainers.
Versioned releases and security guidance
The committee's first priority is a roadmap covering:
- Versioned releases.
- A formal proposal process.
- Security guidance for skill authors and users.
Anthropic describes these as proposed starting priorities and points to the project's Discord for feedback on proposed specification changes.
