Black Forest Labs launches FLUX 3 Image with native 4K output

FLUX 3 Image supports bounding-box layouts, targeted edits, native 4K output, and ten reference images. Commercial weights are available, open weights are planned, and API use is half-price through October 8.

TL;DR

Reference-image limits vary by provider: fal's editing endpoint allows 4 MP per input, while Replicate allows 16 MP. The OpenRouter launch rates put promotional 4K generation at roughly six times the price of 2K.

Bounding-box layouts

Black Forest Labs says bounding boxes work both for composing images from scratch and directing precise edits.

Explicit placement is the most interesting upgrade here.

Pixel-preserving edits

Black Forest Labs claims targeted edits leave every other pixel unchanged, including across multiple editing turns.

fal advertises multiple targeted edits in one pass in its launch post, while its editing guide tells users to chain one edit per request. That leaves a gap between the advertised multi-edit capability and the provider's documented prompting guidance.

Ten reference images

OpenRouter says FLUX 3 decides where references go and renders the whole frame together in its composition example.

The providers expose different request shapes:

  • Replicate: images accepts up to ten JPEG, PNG, GIF or WebP references. Supplying any image switches the model into edit mode.
  • fal: image_urls is required for the editing endpoint. References are numbered by their position in the list.
  • Automatic framing: both providers use the first reference image's aspect ratio when aspect_ratio is auto.

Both document a minimum reference size of 256 pixels per side. fal also exposes enable_prompt_expansion, defaulting to false, to clarify the prompt and make each reference's role explicit.

Native 4K and image pricing

OpenRouter's launch pricing lists five resolution tiers:

| Resolution | Standard price per image | Promotional price |
| --- | ---: | ---: |
| 768 | $0.041 | $0.0205 |
| 1K | $0.048 | $0.024 |
| 1.5K | $0.070 | $0.035 |
| 2K | $0.100 | $0.050 |
| 4K | $0.607 | $0.3035 |

Aspect ratios span 21:9 to 9:21, with an auto option, according to OpenRouter's launch thread.

The resolution menus differ across providers. Replicate documents 768sq, 1k, 1.5k, 2k and 4k; fal's editing page lists 512sq, 768sq, 1k, 2k and 4k. Both default to 1k, and fal says higher tiers take longer.

API access and commercial weights

Black Forest Labs says commercial weight access lets companies fine-tune FLUX 3 Image and deploy it on their own infrastructure. Licensing inquiries go through the company's contact channel rather than a public download.

Web grounding defaults

On Replicate, grounding defaults to on and runs web and image search before generation, according to the README. Disabling it skips that research and is documented as faster, self-contained generation.
