Claude Code cuts its weekly cap to a permanent 25% increase on September 14

Anthropic characterized the adjustment as what it can "sustainably serve" in ClaudeDevs' closing note. kimmonismus' post reported that an earlier announcement was deleted, and kimmonismus' update said it subsequently returned with an explanation. Anthropic's cost-management documentation describes separate rolling five-hour and weekly controls for seat allowances.

The two percentages use different denominators. If the pre-promotion weekly limit is S, the active allowance is 1.5S through September 13 and the permanent allowance becomes 1.25S the next day.

That is a drop of 0.25S, or 16.7% of the active 1.5S allowance. ClaudeDevs' follow-up states the same comparison directly: 25% above the old standard limit, 17% below the limit users have today.

The change targets the weekly ceiling only. The reply also says that five-hour capacity is unchanged, so the announcement does not alter both reset clocks at once.

For Teams and seat-based Enterprise, Anthropic's cost-management documentation says each member draws from an allowance with both a rolling five-hour window and a weekly window, shared with Claude chat and Cowork. Its Pro and Max plan guide says activity in Claude and Claude Code similarly counts against the same limits.

Community accounts turned the numerical distinction into the main controversy. kimmonismus' recap claimed the first version described a 25% cut before a repost recalculated the current-user decrease as 17%.

The official thread now gives both numbers, but mattpocockuk's post described the communication as "fumble after fumble." The disagreement centered on the headline baseline: former standard capacity or the allowance available until September 13.

The announcement is explicitly tied to subscription and seat plans, including seat-based Enterprise, in ClaudeDevs' plan list. That distinguishes it from API-key access: Anthropic's models, usage, and limits guide says Console, Bedrock, Vertex, and Microsoft Foundry API-key users are billed per token and do not face the included-usage hard stop.

For organizations that mix sign-in methods, Anthropic's cost-management documentation says each developer is metered according to the authentication method they used. The September 14 change therefore describes included plan allowance, not API token pricing.
